The Most Restorative Destinations I’ve Visited Across 80+ Countries

As a travel journalist and former full-time traveler of over five years and 80 countries, I’ve been to my fair share of our planet’s most relaxing locales. From lakes and beaches to mountaintops, there are plenty of places around the world that facilitate rest and healing. Sri Lanka’s ayurvedic spa treatments will leave your body feeling blissful, while time spent in the Swiss Alps will clear even the most cluttered of minds.

Take a look at the most restorative destinations around the world and come home from your next trip actually feeling refreshed.

1. Sri Lanka’s South Coast

Sri Lanka, like its neighboring India, is a country of contrasts. On one hand, the city populations are dense and public transportation is a special kind of chaos. On the other hand, Ayurveda, yoga, surfing and many other soul-soothing activities are woven into the fabric of daily life across the island. Sri Lanka’s south coast, in particular, is dotted with beach towns where you can get pleasantly lost in time.

Life here is slow and intentional, built around the joy of taking it easy. Gentle waves make this the perfect place to pick up surfing and spend long days out on the water.

Wellness here goes far deeper than the typical beachside massage. Ayurvedic centers offer multi-day treatments, personalized herbal remedies and therapies rooted in centuries-old traditions. From waking up to fresh-fruit breakfasts to midday yoga and sunset strolls along the sand, places like Mirissa make it easy to slip into a rhythm that feels genuinely restorative.

2. The Swiss Alps

There’s a special kind of clarity that settles in the moment you arrive in the Swiss Alps. You feel on top of the world in more ways than one. The air feels cleaner, the quiet deeper and all your “real world” problems melt away.

Days here unfold simply. Morning coffee is accompanied by total silence and spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks. Winding walks between alpine towns—surrounded by colorful wildflowers and the clanging of cowbells—invoke a naturally meditative experience.

What makes the Alps especially restorative is the absence of urgency. There’s no pressure to do more, see more or rush to the next thing. You settle into a rhythm of movement and rest, fresh air and deep sleep and you leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.

3. Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

Lake Bled and its picturesque, church-topped island might get all the attention, but nearby Lake Bohinj is where locals go to truly unwind. Inside Triglav National Park, one of the most spectacularly peaceful places on Earth, Lake Bohinj feels like you have been magically teleported back to “simpler times” (whenever those might have been).

Waking up and looking out over the lake, mist covers the glassy waters, which are cut only by the occasional early paddler.

Whether it’s Slovenian culture or the magic of the Julian Alps, these mountain towns in Triglav National Park hold a special kind of peace and presence unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. Every moment feels like a slow Sunday afternoon. Bohinj has a special way of making you forget the outside world exists, let alone that anything matters besides the nature surrounding you and the people you’re with.

4. Punta del Diablo, Uruguay

It might sound dramatic, but just thinking about Punta del Diablo brings a quiet peace to my heart. This Uruguayan beach town, where the forest meets the sea, provided such deep restoration that I can still feel a sense of calm just by remembering being there.

Uruguay as a whole is incredibly laidback, but Punta del Diablo takes it even further. Life isn’t scheduled, it just unfolds. Days revolve around the beach and small rituals like sharing mate with friends or swaying in a hammock.

Music is woven into the fabric of life here with bands playing at small beach cafes, dads strumming ukuleles in the sand, and Candombe processions of drummers moving through the streets at night.

In the evenings, friends and family gather at someone’s cabin for an asado. Here, meat cooks slowly over an open fire and is passed around simply, often straight from the grill, while everyone lingers for hours, talking and sipping local wine.

What makes this place feel so restorative is how unstructured everything is. Nothing is overdone or overly curated. You stop trying to optimize your time, and without realizing it, you actually start to relax.
