How to Fight Fatigue and Keep Energy Levels High When Traveling

Whether it’s the jet lag or your jam-packed sightseeing schedule, it’s hard to keep energy levels high when you’re on vacation. You have so many places to visit, attractions to see, and foods to try, so there is no time for a nap.

When you’re in the need of a bit of an energy boost, it can be tempting to reach for a caffeinated beverage. However, caffeine can dehydrate you and throw off your sleep schedule––making it even more difficult to adjust.

Here are some better options for fighting fatigue and keeping your energy levels high when you’re on the go.

1. Eat a healthy snack.

Sure, you’ll want to indulge every once in a while during your trip, but if you’re constantly eating heavy meals or sugary desserts, you might find yourself dozing off. A healthy snack can give you the fuel you need to make it to your next destination.

Pack nuts, trail mix, fresh fruits or veggies, or protein bars with you when you head out for the day. Having a healthy snack in your backpack or purse can save you from a fast food stop that could kill your energy.

2. Get moving.

Whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or car, staying stationary for too long can actually drain your energy levels pretty quickly. To give you the boost you need, find a way to stretch or get your blood flowing.

If you’re driving, find a rest area or place you can pull over to stretch your legs. For traveling on a plane, train, or bus, walk up and down the aisle a few times. If you have space, stretch out your arms, massage your calves and point and release your toes to get your blood circulating––just be careful not to hit or kick any fellow passengers. Here are 10 exercises you can do on a plane (without looking weird).

3. Drink a glass of water.

Dehydration can take a serious toll on your energy levels. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to stay on top of your water intake when you’re traveling.

If you’re feeling tired, drink a glass of cold water. Stay properly hydrated by throwing a water bottle in your backpack or purse. Take regular sips throughout the day––especially if you’re spending time in the sun or taking a walking tour.

4. Maintain your routine.

When you’re traveling, you’re probably ready to leave your daily responsibilities behind. However, if you’re able to maintain some of your regular routines while on vacation, you can adjust much faster.

Try and follow your same morning and night routine, even if the stuff in between is much different. If you normally wake up and go for a run, try to do the same when you’re on vacation. This can signal to your body that it’s time to get up and get going, helping you stay awake for the rest of the day.

Don’t waste another trip struggling with jet lag or napping in the hotel room. Staying on top of your health can help you avoid fatigue and keep your energy levels high––even through packed schedules and long walking tours.
